City Girls’ latest album RAW was recently released, sparking a significant debate within the community regarding its underwhelming sales.
The album was initially expected to make a debut with approximately 6,000 album-equivalent unit sales, which pales in comparison to the numbers achieved by similar mainstream acts (who managed to debut with 10,000 units, although this is only marginally better).
While some individuals ridiculed the Miami duo for their perceived failure, others suspect that there may be some ulterior motives at play. During an episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, the MC and his co-hosts raised doubts about these sales figures, suggesting that the current system fails to accurately reflect the City Girls’ streaming success.
Although these commentators acknowledge that RAW may not reach astronomical sales figures, they argue that this metric does not fully capture the extent of the audience the duo has reached. “I am not aware of any artist signed with a major label who has achieved only 6,000 sales,” expressed Ice during the show.
He proposed that the projected metric likely pertained solely to pure album sales and did not account for streaming figures. Furthermore, he speculated that someone intentionally leaked these deflated numbers in an attempt to undermine the City Girls’ reputation.
Joe Budden echoed these sentiments, stating, “I need to verify that number. It still seems implausible to me. I share your skepticism regarding how those figures were calculated. Perhaps it solely represents pure album sales. It appears that someone was attempting to sabotage their release.”

Furthermore, the cohort also deliberated on the notion that the City Girls may soon cease to exist. Considering the timing of when this speculation arose, the media personalities perceived it as a tactic to generate more attention for RAW. “I simply consider the timing,” Ice remarked. “We haven’t heard anything about them breaking up like this, we haven’t seen any text messages or evidence of this until after the album was released. Why?”

Simultaneously, the explicit rap duo addressed these underwhelming sales on multiple occasions, whether through interviews or individually. They took some responsibility and acknowledged areas in which they believe they could improve in the future. However, JT and Yung Miami also hinted at external factors that may be working against them, suggesting that there may be more to uncover regarding the sales figure of 6K.
