At the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards, Kendrick Lamar reaffirmed his position as the preeminent figure in the genre, earning the distinction of the night’s most decorated artist. The Grammy Award-winning rapper secured four trophies at the annual ceremony, which took place on October 3 at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center and was broadcast on Tuesday.
Kendrick’s dominance was evident as he emerged victorious in every category in which he was nominated, claiming the titles of Hip Hop Artist of the Year, Lyricist of the Year, Best Live Performer, and Video Director of the Year, the latter of which he shared with his longtime collaborator Dave Free.
His triumphs were historic, as he became the first rapper to win Hip Hop Artist of the Year three times and extended his lead in the Lyricist of the Year category with his ninth win. Additionally, he joined Kanye West and JAY-Z as the artist with the most Best Live Performer wins, having secured four of these accolades. Furthermore, he became the first director since Hype Williams, who won four consecutive times between 2009 and 2012, to claim back-to-back Video Director of the Year awards.
Kendrick’s success was attributable to the triumph of his 2022 album, Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers, and its accompanying Big Steppers Tour, as well as his music videos for “Count Me Out” and “Rich Spirit” and his collaboration with Baby Keem on “The Hillbillies.”
In other locations, Drake and 21 Savage were the recipients of two awards each at the BET Hip Hop Awards. They were recognized for their achievements in the Hip Hop Album of the Year category for “Her Loss” and for Best Duo or Group. Similarly, Lil Durk and J. Cole were honored for their collaboration and impact track “All My Life” in the Best Collaboration and Impact Track categories.
Lil Uzi Vert also secured victories in the Song of the Year and Video of the Year categories for his work on “Just Wanna Rock.” Metro Boomin was recognized as both Producer of the Year and DJ of the Year.
Ice Spice was named the Best Breakthrough Hip Hop Artist, while JAY-Z received the Best Featured Verse award for “God Did.” 50 Cent was acknowledged as the Hustler of the Year, and Yung Miami won the Best Hip Hop Platform award for “Caresha Please.”
In addition to celebrating the accomplishments of the past year, the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards paid tribute to some of the genre’s most iconic figures. This was particularly fitting as the genre is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year.
