However, he personally views it as a significant battle that he has fought throughout his career. Having started as an independent artist and then navigating the Def Jam system, Jay-Z admits to not fully comprehending how the system worked and ultimately losing control of his masters. Later, when he became the President of Def Jam, he made it a priority to regain ownership of his masters as part of his role.
