Patrick Mahomes expressed his frustration with the officiating to Josh Allen in a heated exchange following the Kansas City Chiefs’ defeat against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
As they approached each other for a handshake on the field after the game, Mahomes passionately exclaimed, “That was the most outrageous call I have ever witnessed. Offensive offsides in such a crucial moment, it was absolutely dreadful.”
These complaints arose after the game hinged on an offsides call against Kadarius Toney in the final minutes. Toney had just scored what seemed to be a game-winning touchdown after receiving a lateral pass from Travis Kelce, but the referees nullified the play. Consequently, the Chiefs suffered a 20-17 loss, bringing their season record to 8-5. They now face the challenge of securing home-field advantage in the upcoming playoffs.
Later in the evening, Mahomes provided further explanation to the reporters regarding his intense frustration. According to ESPN, Mahomes expressed his discontent by stating, “Throughout my seven-year career, I have never encountered an offensive offside penalty. This is something that should be taught in elementary school. What baffles me is the absence of any prior warning during the entire game. And then, with just a minute remaining, they decide to make such a call? It’s incredibly challenging. I am at a loss for words. Regardless of whether we win or lose, it’s disheartening that the focus shifts to the referees instead of the game itself. This is not what we desire for the NFL or football as a whole. As a competitor, you dedicate your entire week to practice and prepare for the game, hoping that it revolves around your team’s performance and the opponent’s. The last thing you want is to be discussing these matters after the game. I am not concerned about whether there was a flag on the next play or not. I simply want to go out there, give my all, and then assess the final outcome.”
